What is the Academy like?

Engaging experience, on campus and online

High Impact Philanthropy Academy brings a small cohort to Penn’s Ivy League campus to build a foundation together, then continues in an online format as you return home and spend time working and meeting with faculty, guests, and your cohort online. Each lesson builds on each other, creating a deep learning environment where you apply what you learn. You leave the program ready to make a bigger social impact with a supportive network.

High Impact Philanthropy Academy curriculum is rooted in CHIP’s 15+ years of helping individual donors and professional grantmakers worldwide achieve greater social impact. Classroom cases and discussion incorporate CHIP’s latest guidance on crisis grantmaking, addressing inequality, and accessing talent and networks to fulfill social impact goals.

We keep each cohort small to maintain engagement among participants and instructors. The format combines campus and online interactive learning to provide a high-quality educational experience and facilitate peer-to-peer connections that are the hallmarks of the program.

About faculty interactions

Learn more about our faculty and staff.

“I am so grateful to [the faculty] and all the presenters. You all created an environment where it was safe to speak openly and ask questions. You were so responsive to every issue we threw your way."

"Kat's presentation on High Impact Philanthropy defined and quantified social impact in a manageable way. It was expertly presented with memorable examples and accessible concepts. The exercise at the end put the concepts into a practice session."

About our proven curriculum

Learn about Penn’s High Impact Philanthropy Academy from Center for High Impact Philanthropy lead faculty members, Katherina ‘Kat’ Rosqueta and Richard Marker.

“The principles of high impact philanthropy and the four plays [were particularly valuable]. These frameworks gave shape and clarity to issues that I’ve encountered for over a dozen years working in philanthropy.”

About lasting impact

Alumni of the program discuss how they’ve applied what they learned in this full-length webinar about creating greater social impact.

“We have exceeded demand for six of our grant programs for the first time in the 49-year history of our organization! My experience in the Penn program directly contributed to these successful outcomes, specifically in how we structure and promote our grants, and the flexibility we provide to our grantees.”

About the learning environment

Recent alumni discuss how faculty create an open, invigorating environment within each cohort.

“I think the hybrid model is a good idea, because as much as I enjoyed the in-person aspect, I think returning to the material over the course of many weeks is a good idea.”

“I had the best experience! It's left me wanting to learn more and I look forward to engaging in other ways in the future.”

About attending with a family member or colleague

“I'm glad I did this program. A big part of what I liked was taking the class with my daughter. I think that will help our whole family in working on these issues.”

"My sister and I both attended in Fall 2018 and we are still reaping the benefits from the program."
