Advising for Impact

Philanthropic advisors have the power to help clients create greater impact. In June 2025, CHIP will launch Advising for Impact, a certificate program that will teach philanthropic advisors to use high impact philanthropy with their clients. Our program has been certified as a Continuing Education Sponsor by the CFP Board. Participants who are Certified Financial Planners will be eligible for 24 hours of CE. Advising for Impact is a cohort-based program where participants learn the principles of high impact philanthropy and to apply them to the real-world situations their clients face. To learn more about this program and apply, contact Nick Matlin, nmatlin@upenn.edu.

Private Resources for the Public Good: Advanced Topics in Philanthropy

Philanthropy plays a unique role in advancing social change. Unlike business, there is no requirement to generate a financial return to owners, and unlike government (in a democracy), individual donors and institutional funders cannot be voted out. Given philanthropy’s role, what tactics and strategies can philanthropy use for positive social change? This class for graduate students from all schools and undergraduate students will examine key issues in contemporary philanthropy. Faculty and students will explore a different topic each week, featuring thought-provoking readings for discussion and debate.  For several classes, philanthropic leaders from the region and nation will speak, respond to questions, and facilitate discussion.
