Faced with horrific news reports and images from Haiti, many people reach for their checkbooks and credit cards.
But whom to give to, and how to be sure your money is well spent?
Donors can follow a few guidelines before deciding how, where, and what to give, said Katherina Rosqueta, executive director of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy at the University of Pennsylvania.
Make sure what you give matches what groups in Haiti need, she advised.
``If what they need are medical supplies and the flights coming in have clothing, that can cost lives,'' Rosqueta said.
Right now, relief organizations need money -- not canned goods or your mother's old sweater, she said.
