Internship (4-7 months): Social Impact Analytics Initiative

The Center for High Impact Philanthropy and the Wharton Program for Social Impact are hiring an intern for the next 4-7 months to provide research assistance for the creation of a Social Impact Analytics Initiative. This research will explore the relative use, value and adoption of the social impact metrics, tools and dashboards that already exist within the nonprofit and philanthropic sector (Charting Impact, TRASI, Charity Navigator 2.0, Newdea, Social Impact Exchange, etc.) with an eye toward moving the current, fragmented system towards one where funders and nonprofit leaders alike can better determine, manage, and measure performance. With this research and a series of related projects, we seek to improve the impact of nonprofits, social enterprises, and their funders through the use of practical and meaningful analytics.

A preliminary landscape scan will involve web research, discussion with a limited set of funders and/or organizations, and a write up of results. The focus will be on collection and categorization of different approaches, and the final deliverable will be a white paper.

The ideal candidate has excellent research and writing ability with a demonstrated interest in social impact.  Also required are:

  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-directed and motivated with an interest in tackling new projects
  • Detail oriented, but also creative and resourceful in sourcing data and knowledge from a variety of sources and people
  • Experience working as a member of a small, highly collaborative, professional team
  • Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with individuals from multiple disciplines and levels of seniority and to write clearly and compellingly to a lay audience
  • Facility developing material and displaying analysis in a variety of formats, as well as comfort with ambiguity, intellectually entrepreneurial and enjoys a fast-paced learning environment.
  • Prior experience working in the nonprofit, philanthropic or policy sectors is strongly preferred.
  • Additional preferred skills and knowledge include: ability to use a shared socialtext wiki workspace, familiarity with evaluation/assessment metrics, and advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite.

The Intern will work out of the offices of the Center for High Impact Philanthropy, and will be report to a member of the Center’s team. The intern will also be a member of the intern team of the Wharton Program for Social Impact, and will participate in bi-weekly team meetings. Candidate is expected to work 10-15 hours per week during spring semester and will be compensated in the form of a stipend ($1,600-$2,400). Stipend will be determined based upon experience and number of hours the intern is available to work. Student will have the option of staying through the completion of the project, in August, with an additional stipend available for a 10-week summer internship.
