Leader, Global Economic Development
The newly established Center for High Impact Philanthropy aims to provide the tools, information, and metrics needed to help philanthropists make smart social investments – i.e., where financing and potential for impact are linked. The Center will explore models of effective philanthropy within three areas: urban education, global public health and global development, and improving the lives of disadvantaged populations in the US.
The Leader of our global economic development program will serve as the Center’s internal expert on interventions, practices, and models to effectively address global economic development issues. He/she will work closely with the Executive Director and Associate Director to develop the Center’s understanding of where private philanthropy is best positioned to make meaningful improvements in global economic development, and specifically to identify the key levers for investment. This individual will serve a critical “translator” role in identifying relevant, valid academic research, recognizing promising practitioners/programs (at both the macro and micro/site levels), and outlining the key global economic development metrics by which philanthropists can determine the best use of their money. This position will work with global economic development leaders and policy makers, including elected representatives, philanthropists, academics and nonprofit leaders working to improve global economic development.
The ideal candidate will bring a deep understanding of challenges and issues in global economic development, frontline experience, excellent research, communication and problem solving skills, along with outstanding academic credentials.
Qualifications:
- Deep understanding of global economic development issues. Knowledge of relevant frameworks, opportunities for improvement, effective models for delivering impact, frontline practice, key levers for philanthropic investment, chief players, etc.
- Outstanding problem-solving skills. Ability to break down complex problems into manageable analyses. Ability to move from macro to micro levels of thought and analyses. Good pattern recognition skills. Able to identify easily overlooked links.
- Excellent research skills. Well-versed in both academic research methodology as well as practitioner evaluation methodology. Creative and resourceful in sourcing relevant information. Excellent statistical and data analysis skills.
- Excellent oral and listening skills. Ability to interview a broad range of people (academics, nonprofit/NGO managers, funders) to effectively and efficiently obtain information and identify needs.
- Excellent writing skills for communications pieces, such as sector reports, policy briefs, and presentations.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary environments. Ability to work both independently and in a team-based environment. Experience working collaboratively with both researchers and practitioners. Ideal candidate will bring experience translating research findings into practitioner tools, strategies, and programs.
- Fluency in English. Other language skills a plus.
Education/Experience Requirements
MBA, MPP, MPA, MA in Economics, PhD or other relevant advanced degree and 5 - 7 years of experience or equivalent combination of education and experience. Occasional travel may be required. Occasional evening or weekend work may be required.
